the mingle of blues
'sea' and 'blue' are words that make you to feel free. they conjure serene imagery that instantaneously transports you the land of the unknown. painter and prof. surendra sonar has experienced the same and expressed his feelings through his watercolour paintings – seascapes - done around the andaman and nicobar islands.
this territory is considered as one of the spectacular seashores of india. large expanses of white sand, softly gushing bluish-greenish waters and the dancing sky in its varying shades of blue make the perfect backdrop for a painting that invites, soothes and remains infinitely in memory. prof. surendra sonar freezes such moods in his paintings. here, we see the blue of the sky coming down all the way to meet the green of the sea water. one can experience the softness and freshness of the many shades of blues and greens in the landscape and seascape, as well.
the sea shows changes at every moment; and that is why painting a seascape is really a challenge. but sonar has accepted it with aplomb! in one painting, we see a pair of small boats at rest in the shallow waters; the serenity of this painting makes you skip a heartbeat. then in another, we see trees peering at their own beauty in a pond; immediately reminiscent of the story of narssious.
an artist of sonar's calibre has an eye to capture the divine gift of beautiful nature. his paintings clearly show his fascination for colourful trees and multi-coloured grass. he has used shades aplenty of greens and blues with small brush strokes with great detail…
landscape painting is an expression of what the artist wants to see. sonar paints all these magnificent landscapes in a distinctive style: while normally a landscape is either imaginary or an exact copy of reality sonar's landscapes capture the immediate mood of nature. while a human figure is generally added to feel life and to show proportion in the landscape, sonar rarely paints human figures in his paintings. coming from an emotive level, his paintings succeed at capturing the ethos of the moment in nature and needs no add-ons to convey the artist's musings.
